childhood friends build foundation to serve their community

If the COVID pandemic and 2020 shutdown taught us one thing, it’s that staying at home can be more exciting if you have usable outdoor space. Cap City Decks & Patios opened for business in November 2021, only three months before COVID forced folks indoors. They were more than happy to open the back door to new opportunities for residential homeowners.

“There was no way we could have imagined business working out as well as it did,” says Cap City co-owner Zach Petroff. “When we started, people were stuck at home, working at home, and wanted their outdoor space to be nice. We saw an opportunity to improve the lives of our friends, family and the Columbus community with outdoor structures.”

Two years later, Cap City Decks & Patios is operating six crews and completing six to 10 projects a week. With 30 years of combined experience in the outdoor construction field, Cap City is a licensed contractor specializing in building custom decks, patios, pergolas, gazebos, backyard pavilions and fences. Nothing they build comes out of a pre-made kit. In two short years, they’ve installed more than 500 decks and patios and 150 pergolas.

Cap City Decks & Patios prides itself on its customer service and follow-through, honesty and love of the central Ohio community. Not to mention their eye-catching designs. Either Zach or partner Chris Sellers are on site to meet each prospective customer and provide a free estimate.

“A common perception of contractors is that they’re hard to get a hold of and don’t stick to their word,” Sellers says. “And we do. As a customer, you will meet with one or both of the owners and there will be constant communication throughout the build process.”

Chris and Zach have been friends since growing up in the Clintonville area of Columbus. Chris calls himself a “serial entrepreneur,” mowing lawns in his neighborhood as a 12 year old, then forming CDS Landscaping at 18, and eventually branching into building patio pavers, decks, fences and pergolas. In 2015, he reconnected with Zach while owning a furniture cabinet store in Hilliard. By then, Zach had a realtor’s license and had been flipping houses since 2008.

“Zach was getting tired of flipping houses and we decided we could get great satisfaction out of creating new usable exterior spaces and serving the Columbus residential market,” Chris says. “Zach and I are like-minded. We prioritize work and we’re community oriented. We wanted to serve our community and express ourselves creatively  through our work.”

Zach says teaming with his lifelong friend at Cap City Decks & Patios was the best decision he’s ever made.

“It’s very rewarding when someone says, ‘oh wow’ and they have this beautiful backyard and they’re gushing about your work,” he says. “We like putting smiles on people’s faces.”
